Sperm Storage Issues

I need some advice if anyone has had this experience before. Brandon and I froze two samples at a fertility clinic when his sperm count was at its lowest point. The samples were a measly 2 million and 8 million but we paid for 6 months of storage anyway. After some lifestyle changes which included vitamins and cutting out caffeine he managed to bring his count up to 19 million. We had a couple vials stored at another clinic at that time. The reason we chose another clinic is because the military does their IUI's at that clinic and we would have had to pay about $200 to move our crappy sperm from the other clinic to this one. So we never planned on using the crappy sperm we simply didn't want to pay to move it and it wasn't worth it anyway.

So we've been getting letters to pay for another 6 months of storage for about 6 months now. We never responded thinking they would just destroy Brandon's sperm if they got no response. Brandon even said he signed a paper stating that they would do that. Well last week we got a letter saying that we owe them $350 for storage fees and we have 10 days to respond or they will send our bill to collections. COLLECTIONS?!?! Are you kidding me?? I'd hate to pay $350 for shitty sperm that we're going to make them destroy anyway so we don't have to go through this again in another six months but on the other hand we can't afford for this to go to collections. Brandon and I both would lose our security clearances, which could get Brandon kicked out of the Navy. So my question is, do we really have to pay or should they have destroyed when they received no response from us?

  1. If he signed something saying they could destroy it then they should destroy it and not keep billing you. My husband had to sign something saying they could destroy his and had to get it notarized and then they destroyed it. He had to do this after they kept sending us bills and they said they would have sent it to a collection agency without a response from him. I would definitely call them and see what you need to do because you don't want it going to collections. Just explain to them what's going on and they should be able to help you out. Good Luck!

  3. Wow, I can't believe they would make you pay for the extra storage if you signed something stating that they could destroy it after the 6 months was up. I would see if you could request a copy of the signed document to see what it says. I hope you guys don't have to pay for it.

  4. I would pull a copy of the original storage agreement and write a letter saying based on the agreement of date x, the agreement was to destroy the sperm after 6 months. You never agreed to additional storage fees. There also may be some language about how fee disputes are handled (mediation?). All correspondence should be sent return receipt requested. If you live in the same town, you might be able to pay the fees (and protect your security clearances) and then seek to recover them in small claims court. Goodness, I hate this kind of crap!

  5. Wow! That's bull-crap! You never agreed to have them store it over 6 months. If he signed a paper stating that they could destroy them, I would fight that! Give them hell!

  6. Well it's not that he signed an agreement saying to destroy it after 6 months. We paid for 6 months of storage and he said he signed something that said IF we do not pay for additional storage they will destroy the sperm. So we never responded to the bills thinking that's what they would do. Now they're threatening to send it to collections. I left a message with the clinic and hopefully I'll get a call back today. Brandon said he's rather pay the $350 that worry about his security clearance but we're going to destroy them anyway so they should waive that fee. It's not our fault they stored our sperm even though we weren't paying them.

  7. A lot of people forget about their storage if they prepay for a certain time, and then move and forget to forward the new address to the sperm bank. So sperm banks send out notices to get your attention because they do not know if you want to keep it or not. Imagine this being one for your good samples and then it is destroyed for not paying, but you simply forgot. I would just contact the bank and explain the situation and maybe they will help you out. Good luck!
